Buying Tips for Strollers

The best strollers are the ones that make it easier for you to take your little one wherever you go, whenever you need. However, most parents can easily be overwhelmed at the sheer number of available options, especially if they’re choosing a stroller for their first child. That’s why we’re here to help you choose the right stroller for you and your precious little bundle.

6 Minutes, 6 Key Decisions

Quality and Value

Key Decision 1: Stroller Type

Strollers come in several different types ranging from baby strollers to lightweight umbrella strollers for toddlers. Which type is best for you depends on your child’s age, where your routine takes you and how active of a lifestyle you lead. Because most strollers are designed for a certain level of use, consider choosing more than one such as a standard stroller for daily use and a jogging stroller for morning runs.

Standard Stroller- Designed for general daily use, standard strollers typically feature four wheels and two short handles. While most standard strollers feature a three-point restraint system, some feature a five-point harness and are ideal for older, more active children. View Standard Strollers

Jogging Stroller - Jogging strollers are specially designed to be pushed while jogging or running. Most jogging strollers feature three wheels for maximum stability, either a fixed or swivel front wheel and an ergonomic handle so that the stroller can be pushed with either one or two hands.

Umbrella Stroller - Lightweight and portable, umbrella strollers are designed to easily and compactly fold up. Most umbrella strollers feature four wheels, two short handles and are easy to maneuver, especially around stores, displays and through crowds.

Sit and Stand Stroller – Sit and stand strollers are ideal for parents with more than one small child because they feature a platform at the back for you to step up and check on your little passengers. And, they allow the rear-most child to stand while the child in front stays seated for the ride.

Tandem Stroller – Also great for parents with more than one young child, tandem strollers feature two or more chairs arranged single-file, one in front of the other. Tandem strollers fold more compactly and can maneuver through doors, aisles and crowds more easily than side-by-side multi-child strollers.

Pram Stroller – WPrams feature a bassinet and are specially designed baby strollers for newborns and infants. Many of the more popular pram strollers can convert to a standard unit, which helps reduce the need to purchase a new one when your child outgrows the need for a baby stroller.

Travel System Stroller – There are two primary types of travel strollers: those designed to accommodate a car seat and those that include a car seat with an adjustable base that’s designed to fit in the stroller. Both types of travel strollers often make getting your child in and out of the car easier.

Special Needs Stroller – Special needs strollers are specifically designed for differently-abled adults rather than babies or small children. However, special needs strollers are available in many of the same types such as standard and jogging strollers.

Key Decision 2: Seating Capacity

Each stroller is designed to seat up to a certain number of children. While the seating configuration for single strollers is fairly straightforward, multi-child strollers are available in a variety of arrangements to offer the best maneuverability, ease of handling or child access.

One - Designed to accommodate one child at a time, single strollers are the most common and therefore often available in more styles, colors and with a greater variety of features.

Two - Double strollers feature two chairs, one for each child, and are available in tandem seating configurations for maneuverability or side-by-side for easier access to the little passengers.

Three - Also available as side-by-side and tandem strollers, triple strollers feature three seats to accommodate up to three children at a time.

More than Three - Multi-child strollers that can seat four or more children at a time are ideal for large families and daycare outings.

Key Decision 3: Direction

Choosing between a forward-facing stroller and a rear-facing stroller primarily depends on your child’s age. Newborns and infants often feel much more secure in a rear-facing stroller so that they have you in view at all times. However, older children and toddlers are more likely to benefit from a forward-facing stroller because they’re growing more curious and confident about their surroundings.

Forward-Facing - More common, and sometimes more affordable, than rear-facing strollers, forward-facing strollers give children a full view of the world around them. Forward-facing strollers are better suited for older babies and toddlers as they are less likely to stress at so much visual stimuli.

Rear-Facing - Much more appropriate for newborns and younger babies, rear-facing strollers such as baby strollers and prams help prevent infant stress that may be triggered by not being able to see you. And, rear-facing strollers allow for greater face-to-face interaction between you and your baby.

Reversible - Reversible strollers can function as a rear-facing stroller when your child is an infant and as a forward-facing stroller as he or she gets older. And, reversible strollers let you easily switch between the two by either a reversible seat or a reversible handle, depending on the model.

Key Decision 4: Color

Because parenthood is an active and messy business, choosing a stroller color now involves more than deciding between pink for a girl and blue for a boy. Consider how well the color can hide stains, how easy it’ll be to pick the stroller out of a crowd and if you lead an active lifestyle, how easy it is for others to see you walking or jogging with your little one if it gets dark or stormy.

Key Decision 5: Weight Capacity

Strollers need to safely accommodate your child plus the weight of any supplies, toys and other items. Whether you’re looking at baby strollers, umbrella strollers or larger models for toddlers, be sure that whichever stroller you choose can safely handle the weight without tipping over, folding in or collapsing.

Up to 45 lbs - Lower weight capacity models typically include baby strollers for infants and lightweight umbrella strollers for younger children. While these strollers are often easier to transport, you’ll need to replace it once your child outgrows it.

45-75 lbs - Middle weight capacity strollers are generally well-suited for toddlers and include baby strollers that can convert to a standard unit as the child grows. And, many of these strollers feature a shopping basket below to store supplies and toys.

Over 75 lbs - Strollers with a weight capacity of 75 lbs and up include travel strollers, multi-child strollers and special needs strollers for adults and children who may not have full control over their upper body.

Key Decision 6: Special Features

A stroller’s primary purposes are to help keep your child safe and to make it easier for you to take your child with you wherever you go. Consider choosing a stroller with some additional features to make being on the go with your little one easier and to help keep the precious passenger a bit safer.

Height Adjustable Handle - Adjustable handles can be raised and lowered to make it more comfortable for taller people and parents of different height to push the stroller.
